About

Charlottetown

The capital city of Prince Edward Island is both a cultural and a business centre for the entire province. The perfect “tiny city,” if you’re looking for a little bit of big-city life, without the long traffic jams, Charlottetown might just be for you. And even though Charlottetown is a city, you’ll still find homes with water frontage or water views.

If you’re seeking Charlottetown waterfront property, PEI’s capital city has plenty of options.

Here are some other reasons why Charlottetown residents chose to live in the provincial capital:

The culture. Home to the Confederation Centre of the Arts and its affiliated annual Charlottetown Festival, Charlottetown has a national reputation for its theatre. It also boasts an active music scene for the numerous musicians who call Prince Edward Island home. Add to that the many art galleries and craft shops, and if it’s culture you seek, Charlottetown won’t disappoint. Every summer, thousands of tourists visit Charlottetown to take in the world-class performances residents have at their fingertips.

The business sector. Numerous businesses and business support agencies can be found in Charlottetown. Innovation PEI, which offers a range of supports to businesses at all levels in multiple industries, is located in the city’s downtown core, where you’ll also find IT firms, start-up funding agencies, and organizations dedicated to supporting and advancing PEI’s businesses. Should you wish to start your own business (or advance an existing one), living near the heart of the province’s business core is a huge convenience.

The food. Charlottetown enjoys a thriving food scene. With its high level of restaurants per capita, the Culinary Institute of Canada, and world-renowned chefs, the biggest dining decision you’ll need to make is where you wish to eat tonight. Many of the province’s annual Fall Flavours Festival events also take place in the Charlottetown region.

The events, festivals, and sports. Many events, festivals, and celebrations take place in PEI’s capital city, and you’ll also find a great selection of sporting events, recreational activities, and extra-curriculars for all ages in Charlottetown. Take in a Charlottetown Islanders (hockey) or Island Storm (basketball) game. Golfers will be pleased to know that several courses are located within a 30-minute radius of Charlottetown.

The convenience. When you work in Charlottetown and live in Charlottetown, you can say goodbye to hours-long daily commutes. Many people who have their home and work lives based in Charlottetown find they can get to and from work within a 10-minute drive. Others enjoy biking or walking to work, and there’s also an active public transportation system to help you get around. Charlottetown is located in Queens County in the centre of the province, making travel to other parts of the Island manageable. When you live in Charlottetown, you’re also minutes away from its neighbouring municipality Stratford, just across the Charlottetown Harbour, and a short drive from Cornwall—both of which are active, growing communities.

The proximity to water. Even in the heart of a busy city, when you live in Charlottetown, you’re never far from water. The downtown, along Charlottetown waterfront, features shops, galleries, and an accessible boardwalk. Many residential areas throughout the city offer water views. If it’s a beach you crave, you’re less than 20 minutes away from multiple provincial beaches, as well as the National Park on the North Shore, where you’ll find Brackley, Stanhope, and Dalvay beaches.

The education opportunities. Charlottetown houses the province’s only university (UPEI), the main office for its largest provincial college (Holland College), the only French-speaking post-secondary institute in the province (Collège de I’Île), and the Maritime Christian College. Additionally, one of only five veterinary schools in Canada, the AVC, is located in Charlottetown, as part of UPEI. Charlottetown is also home to numerous public and private schools for K-12 students.

The diversity. Charlottetown has been blessed with an increase in immigration over the last twenty years. People from all over the world, from many different cultures, now call Charlottetown home. Throughout the city, you’ll notice unique architecture, ranging from the established homes of Brighton and downtown to newer developments in East Royalty and West Royalty.

The history. Charlottetown played a key part in the forming of our nation as what we know it today: Canada. In 1864, provincial leaders met in Charlottetown to discuss Confederation. Charlottetown also acknowledges the province’s rich Indigenous culture, and you’ll find various Mi’kmaw artists, poets, and storytellers throughout the region. The public is invited to the Mi’kmaw Confederacy of PEI’s pow wows that take place down at Confederation Landing Park, by the waterfront.

Culture. Business. Water. Convenience. Diversity. History. Food. Charlottetown has all this and more…
